چکیده

We present a fully adaptive numerical scheme for evolutionary PDEs in Cartesian geometry based on a second-order finite volume discretization. A multiresolution strategy allows local grid refinement while controlling the approximation error in space. For time discretization we use an explicit Runge–Kutta scheme of second-order with a scale-dependent time step. On the finest scale the size of the time step is imposed by the stability condition of the explicit scheme. On larger scales, the time step can be increased without violating the stability requirement of the explicit scheme. The implementation uses a dynamic tree data structure. Numerical validations for test problems in one space dimension demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the local time-stepping scheme with respect to both multiresolution scheme with global time stepping and finite volume scheme on a regular grid. Fully adaptive three-dimensional computations for reaction–diffusion equations illustrate the additional speed-up of the local time stepping for a thermo-diffusive flame instability. 2007 Elsevier Inc. A Multiresolution Space-Time Adaptive Scheme for the Bidomain Model in Electrocardiology

The bidomain model of electrical activity of myocardial tissue consists of a possibly degenerate parabolic PDE coupled with an elliptic PDE for the transmembrane and extracellular potentials, respectively. This system of two scalar PDEs is supplemented by a time-dependent ODE modeling the evolution of the gating variable. In the simpler subcase of the monodomainmodel, the elliptic PDE reduces t...

Local time stepping for implicit-explicit methods on time varying grids

In the context of nonlinear conservation laws a model for multiphase flows where slow kinematic waves co-exist with fast acoustic waves is discretized with an implicit-explicit time scheme. Space adaptivity of the grid is implemented using multiresolution techniques and local time stepping further enhances the computing time performances. A parametric study is presented to illustrate the robust...

Comparison of Adaptive Multiresolution and Adaptive Mesh Refinement Applied to Simulations of the Compressible Euler Equations

We present a detailed comparison between two adaptive numerical approaches to solve partial differential equations, adaptive multiresolution (MR) and adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). Both discretizations are based on finite volumes in space with second order shock-capturing and explicit time integration either with or without local time stepping. The two methods are benchmarked for the compressi...

A General Solution for Implicit Time Stepping Scheme in Rate-dependant Plasticity

In this paper the derivation of the second differentiation of a general yield surface implicit time stepping method along with its consistent elastic-plastic modulus is studied. Moreover, the explicit, trapezoidal implicit and fully implicit time stepping schemes are compared in rate-dependant plasticity. It is shown that implementing fully implicit time stepping scheme in rate-dependant plasti...

Techniques for Locally Adaptive Time Stepping Developed over the Last Two Decades

Adaptive mesh refinement techniques are well established and widely used for space discretizations. In contrast, local time stepping is much less used, and the corresponding techniques are less mature, needing delicate synchronization steps, which involve interpolation, extrapolation or projection. These operations can have adverse effects on the stability, and can also destroy important geomet...
